Montana Housing Market Still Heating Up
I’ll be honest with you, I’m not exactly excited to write this one.
Not because it’s not interesting, but because it’s never fun being the one bringing the bad news. But yeah, it looks like Montana’s housing market and popularity really haven’t cooled off.

I honestly thought we were past the craziness from the pandemic a few years back. It felt like things were starting to level out. Fewer out-of-state plates, a little more breathing room.
Turns out, not so much.
According to MoveBuddha, Montana is still one of the hottest places people want to move to. They’re not guessing either. This is based on actual search data from people looking up how to move, so it’s a pretty solid snapshot of real interest.
And Montana residents probably aren’t going to love what it shows.
Montanas Move In vs Move Out Ratio
Right now, we’re sitting at nearly a 2 to 1 move-in to move-out ratio. For every one person leaving, about two are moving in.
On top of that, we’ve jumped up to the 4th most popular state to move to. Just last year, we were down at 17th, and it felt like things might finally be slowing down.
Seems people are still drawn to the Treasure State thanks to our open space and a lower cost of living compared to where they’re coming from.
The tough part is, a lot of that growth is coming at the expense of generational Montanans.
