Now that fall is in the air, soon we'll be gathering around the table, giving thanks as we dine on dish after dish of family traditions, regional recipes, and just good down-home cookin'.

Thanksgiving is my favorite meal. In fact, if I were on death row and given one last meal, it would be Thanksgiving dinner.

Here in Montana, several different foods are celebrated at this time of year. As the leaves turn and the temperatures drop, we see many more people using their slow cookers and preparing more hearty meals, such as chili, casseroles, and soups.

So, what is Montana's favorite fall food?

Is it a delicious elk stew? Is it deer roast with potatoes and carrots? Is it savory? Is it sweet? Is it something that combines the two? Actually, according to one source, it's a cobbler, but not just any kind of cobbler. This is as Montana as Montana gets.

According to the folks over at AMFM, they took a look at the favorite fall food from each state and then ranked them in order of popularity. In case you're wondering, Montana's dish is ranked 22nd on the list.

So, what type of cobbler are Montanans looking forward to this fall? The answer to the question is huckleberry.

Now, don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of huckleberries. I think they're delicious, but I'm not sure it's the most Montana thing out there. I mean, who doesn't love cherry cobbler? So, why not the Flathead Cherry? I've made this argument before, while I enjoy both fruits, I think the Flathead Cherry is more Montana than the huckleberry.

Oh, and in case you're wondering what dish took the top spot? It would be chili from Texas. Other dishes ranked ahead of Huckleberry Cobbler include sweet potato pie, chicken and dumplings, cornbread, gumbo, country ham, and pumpkin pie.
