The USDA has issued a recall notice for frozen chicken patties and chicken kebabs that may be contaminated with Listeria, which can cause a very serious infection. The chicken products were produced in Canada and shipped to the United States, and may be in freezers nationwide.

Symptoms of illness caused by Listeria infection start 1 to 4 weeks after eating contaminated food, making it difficult to pinpoint the source of illness. People may not remember all that they've eaten which might be the source of infection.

Although the chicken kebab product box says that the contents are fully cooked, "the problem was discovered after FSIS performed routine product testing and the results indicated the product may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes."

Per the date of the USDA notice, there were not yet reports of illness due to consuming these recalled products. What happens if you consume food contaminated with Listeria? According to the USDA's recall:

"Listeriosis can cause fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions sometimes preceded by diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms. An invasive infection spreads beyond the gastrointestinal tract. In pregnant women, the infection can cause miscarriages, stillbirths, premature delivery or life-threatening infection of the newborn. In addition, serious and sometimes fatal infections in older adults and persons with weakened immune systems."
