January and February are traditionally the harshest months, with temperatures often plunging well below zero. In some years, the mercury dips past -30, and wind chills make even a short walk to the mailbox feel like an Arctic expedition.
Montana Winter Forecast 2025
For Montanans, that’s just part of the seasonal rhythm, but predicting how bad it’s going to get is another story.

Long before smartphones and Doppler radar, people relied on nature to forecast the months ahead. The Old Farmer’s Almanac, which has been tracking weather patterns since the 18th century, says Montana could be in for a cold, snowy stretch this winter. And according to old-time weather lore, the natural world is already dropping hints.
Rodents hoarding more than usual, insects disappearing earlier, trees producing heavier coats of bark. These are all just some of the subtle signs locals have watched for generations. While it might sound like folklore, many swear by these indicators, and this year, some are already noticing the patterns.
In towns like Bozeman and Missoula, puffy coats and fur-lined boots are coming out earlier than usual, and wood piles are growing fast. Whether you buy into the Almanac’s predictions or not, it might be wise to add another cord or two of firewood and double-check that snowblower.
