Monday night, the University of Houston Cougars, under the tutelage of Coach Kelvin Sampson, will meet the University of Florida Gators for the NCAA Men's Basketball National Championship. As you have probably heard several times by now, Coach Sampson is also the former head coach of the Montana Tech Orediggers, a school he led to then-unseen success and a school where he left a lasting legacy. Coach Kelvin is a member of the Digger Athletics Hall of Fame. Sampson is a mentor to current Oredigger Head Coach Adam Hiatt. Hiatt's present-day Orediggers proudly play on Kelvin Sampson Court. But even as Sampson has moved on, you can tell there is a lot of Butte left in him.

Montana Tech junior forward Hayden Diekhans was awarded both the Frontier Conference Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year awards and head coach Adam Hiatt took home the Frontier Conference Coach of the Year award it was announced Wednesday afternoon.

The Montana Tech Mens Basketball team have picked up an impressive, Montana-grown big man in their quest for a fourth consecutive Frontier Conference Title in Rhett Reynolds who has spent the past 2 seasons at the University of Montana.

After winning their third straight regular season title and tournament championship, Montana Tech Head Coach Adam Hiatt received his second Frontier Conference Coach of the Year nod to go with three first team all-conference, an honorable mention, and two players of the year honors.

It's not been often as of late that we have been able to say that the Orediggers are looking for redemption against a Frontier Conference opponent. Montana Tech's mens team is 8-1 in league play and are riding a 4-game winning streak. Over the last 4 games they have beaten every opponent by 18 or more. Their last setback? January 20th against the University of Providence,70-59 in Great Falls. Tonight, the Argos come to Butte for a conference doubleheader that starts with the women's game at 5pm and you could say that both teams are looking for a bit of revenge.

It will be the Frontier Conference verses the Cascade Collegiate Conference and the Continental Athletic Conference in consecutive evenings of men's basketball starting tonight at Kelvin Sampson Court in Montana Tech's HPER Complex. The University of Montana-Western Bulldogs and the host Montana Tech Orediggers will be entertaining the Southern Oregon University Raiders and the Northern New Mexico College Eagles in what should be an exciting preview of what fans can expect during the upcoming season.

Any way you slice it, the 2023-24 season is going to be an exciting one as both the men and women now have an exhibition game each under their belts and look forward to nonconference play which begins this month. The Montana Tech Mens Basketball Team officially announced its 2023 recruiting class. All four newcomers are Montanans and many of the names are already familiar to fans of Butte High and Butte Central basketball.

The Frontier Conference announced its All-Academic teams for Men's and Women's Basketball earlier today and the Montana Tech Orediggers are very well-represented on both teams.

Playing without Frontier Conference MVP Caleb Bellach, the Montana Tech Orediggers found solid ground in overtime and were able to fend off Thomas More University of Kentucky 77-72 in the second round of the NAIA National Men's Basketball Tournament Wednesday night at Kelvin Sampson Court.
