Butte America Foundation

We may be shoveling snow right now, but spring is right around the corner and that means St. Patrick's Day is not far away. In Butte, that's a pretty big deal. Our friends at the Butte America Foundation are getting things planned right now and they are looking for a Grand Marshal for this year's parade.

I was not even a full year in my career with this Butte group of radio stations when the panic button was firmly pressed in our GM's office. It was 2003 and the group in charge of funding the annual 3rd of July Fireworks Show was out of money. There were not funds to cover that summer's upcoming fireworks show on the 3rd of July. It was that day, I believe, that we went on-air and started collecting donations from listeners. Soon local businesses joined in and started challenges with other local businesses in their respective fields. Donations and momentum continued to grow until the final day of the donation drive where we teamed up with our radio friends down the street from the Butte Broadcasting Group and did a citywide bucket drive on the corner of Harrison and Dewey live on all of Butte's local commercial radio stations and wound up getting enough donations to fund the fireworks show for not only that year but for the next three years. After that, Brooks Hanna Ford picked up the bill for a few years. And since then, Town Pump has been the sole sponsor of the annual 3rd of July Fireworks Show

It is fitting that on Independence Day, the Butte, America Foundation is looking to embody Butte's independent spirit when choosing the Grand Marshal for this year's Independence Day Parade. And there are so many fitting individuals to choose from. Who do you know that fits the bill? Is there a special teacher or educator who had made a difference in your life? A local business leader who is making waves. Perhaps an individual who is involved in a charity or nonprofit wo is doing big thing for the community. Maybe a relligious leader. The list goes on and on. But this year, it's up to you.

The 2023 edition of the parade is being planned as we speak with Matt Boyle and the Butte America Foundation in charge and is scheduled for a 10am start time from the Butte Civic Center parking lot and again will head south on Harrison to Elizabeth Warren where disassembly may begin. Entry deadline is 11:59 PM, June 27th, 2023.

The parade gets underway tomorrow, Saturday, October 29th at 8 p.m. on the corner of East Granite & Arizona in Butte. From there the parade will head west on Granite to Main, then south on Main to Park Street. Bring the family as there will be plenty of colorful displays and costumes to check out!
