Has the Great Durkee’s Shortage of 2025 begun?
I'll be the first to admit it, I did not see toilet paper as being the #1 commodity that would be in tight supply or outright unavailable during the insanity of the Covid-19 pandemic from back in 2020. I don't think anybody did. Now don't get me wrong. Toilet paper is important but you wouldn't think of it as ranking up there with food and water on our hierarchy of must-haves during a crisis. If anything, watching some hoarding case upon case proved that at the core, people are irrational and sometimes even a little bit evil. Especially when it comes to things that aren't really necessities but things that would really aggravate you if you reached for it and it was no longer there. Like Durkee's Famous Sauce. Especially this close to Thanksgiving.
A lot of you may be shaking your head right now wondering what this is, but Durkee's Famous Sauce holds a place, at least in 20th Century Butte lore, right up there with the pasty, Marcus Daly and unexplained structure fires. It's a sandwich spread, but growing up we would have it on everything. My Grandma Audree used to put it in her famous potato salad. Grandpa Tom used to use it to hold his dentures in. And on a turkey sandwich the day after Thanksgiving? Pure heaven. There's something about a "Turkey Durkee" that is as delicious as it is fun to say. But now, according to a recent post in the always true, never pulled out of their posterior Facebook group, "Butte 411", there is no more Durkee's, at least not now due to a distribution error.
Is there a Durkee's shortage? Are people hoarding it? Durkee's would definitely be an odd thing to keep in large supply. Delicious as it is, I've seen a single jar of Durkee's last longer than some marriages But when you want it, you really want it. So I checked at our local Walmart. True to the group's claim, there was not a single bottle to be found.
Even if there is no Durkee's to be found in Butte, you can still get it online, apparently. Durkee's own website even has a "where you can buy" page. If that fails, you can always try ebay. If that, I don't know what we can do. I'm going to be very upset next week if I don't get my Turkey Durkee. And I don't even want to think about what's going to happen with Grandpa. Have you seen Durkee's in any local stores lately?
