A very large amount of heavy, wet snow is headed for the central mountains of Montana along with very 50 mph winds. Travel in the area during this weather advisory might be difficult at times due to reduced visibility.

Rain and slushy snow has been falling throughout parts of Montana on Sunday afternoon. MDT cameras show wet roads, but some will probably become snow covered off and on in the coming days. This round of wet weather is a welcomed event.

  • Total snow accumulations between 1 and 2 feet, with isolated amounts approaching 3 feet over the highest peaks.
  • Winds gusting as high as 55 mph.
  • WHERE...Little Belt and Highwood Mountains.
  • WHEN...From noon Tuesday to midnight Wednesday Night.
  • IMPACTS...Travel could be very difficult to impossible.
  • Those in the backcountry should ensure they have appropriate knowledge and gear and may want to consider alternate plans.
  • Widespread blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility.
  • The combination of heavy, wet snow and strong winds could cause extensive damage to trees and power lines.

As of the end of day on Saturday, May 4th: The Gallatin Basin has 70% of median snow water equivalent for the season. The Upper Missouri Basin is sitting at 47% of median snow water equivalent for the season. The Madison Basin is currently at 82% of median snow water equivalent for the season.
