A slice of Butte in Downtown Las Vegas
Downtown Las Vegas has a distinct 1970s vibe to it. Sure, "Glitter Gulch" has all of the modern slot machines and LED lights that you'll find on the Strip, but it's a lot more like the Vegas that many remember from years ago. You can move from place to place without a 20-minute walk. You can get reasonably priced food. And it was 1970s Las Vegas where a young daredevil from Butte, Montana became a worldwide phenomenon by attempting to jump over the fountains at Caesar's Palace on his Harley Davidson motorcycle.
Sure, Caesar's Palace is on the Strip, but it is Downtown where the retro-vibe of an incredible pizza joint bearing the name and image of this Butte icon seems to fit best. And finding this place on a hot July night after a 115-degree day fighting the crowds on the Strip was like finding a Butte-tinged oasis in Downtown Las Vegas.
Just off the entrance to the Fremont Street Experience you will find Evel Pie, which is an experience in itself. And although we may have claimed Evel's "#1" Harley logo and associated stuntman uniforms as our own, it seems Sin City is equally as proud of Knievel and his incredible stunts, both successful and unsuccessful, and you will find these logos all over the joint.
Oh yeah, they also serve pizza. And they have an incredible selection.
The pie is exactly as their website claims.
"Evel Pie has its own ‘70s American iconography that dovetails perfectly. No fancy lentil-crusted, tofu-topped asparagus pies here. Like in Evel’s day, just cheese and pepperoni New York slices (among others) faster than you can jump a canyon."
I had the "Balls to the Wall", which is loaded with meatballs and carmelized onions with ricotta cheese on a thin crust with a tomato sauce that has got a bit of a kick to it. I was given a fresh, generously sized slice that was one of the best I have ever had. The only way it could be better is if Butte was in their delivery area. If you are heading to Las Vegas, you have to check this place out.
