High Ore Road Plays Inside Butte's Orphan Girl Mine Shaft

This Tuesday evening at 6pm, High Ore Road will play as part of the Orphan Girl's Underground Music Series at the World Museum of Mining. This is of particular importance to me because I play bass and sing in High Ore Road, but I also come from mining families on both parents side.

As a part of a couple of different bands over the years, I can easily say that this is by far the most, well, unbelievable place I will have ever played. The stage sits about a quarter mile under the Orphan Girl headframe in the actual shaft of the mine. An actual Butte mine. There is a clearing that is just about perfect for a small stage and seating area, although I'm sure that is not what it was originally intended for. It's an area that you have to walk a bit to reach but each step is a step deeper and deeper into Butte's incredible history. You see the drifts. You read the safety signs. You walk where only miners once walked. I can't wait.

It's one thing to feel the thrill of walking through a once-working underground mine operation but it comes with a sense of apprehension. There is no darkness like complete underground darkness. The silence is eerie. While we will be on a safe, guided tour, it makes you appreciate what it took for those of us with fathers or grandfathers who worked underground without any guarantee of safety. It truly took a different cut of man to work in those conditions. A damp, dark, dangerous mine. We're going go go down for a couple of hours of fun and entertainment. For those men, it was their lives, sometimes literally.
