Montana's Underground Town

Located in the northern part of the state, Havre has quite a history. Known as the largest city in the Hi-Line, Havre is home to one of the best-preserved Buffalo Jumps in the world. The Too Close For Comfort site, which is located behind the Holiday Village Shopping Center, dates back 2000 years.

Havre is also home to 'The Underground Town".

Back in 1904, a fire destroyed much of the business district in downtown Havre, so many businesses decided to go underground. While several of these businesses were legit, a few were a little more...questionable.

@destinationnorthwest1 Beneath the quiet streets of Havre, Montana lies an entire hidden world of history. After a devastating fire in 1904 destroyed much of the town, businesses relocated underground to keep serving the community. Today, you can step back in time on a guided tour through these preserved tunnels, where saloons, barber shops, a bakery, a brothel, and even a hidden speakeasy once operated. 🎟️ Admission Rates: Adults $17 | Kids (6–12) $9 | Ages 5 & under free | Groups of 15+ $13 per person. Walking through Havre Beneath the Streets feels like entering a secret city frozen in the early 1900s—a fascinating glimpse into resilience, resourcefulness, and the untold stories of Montana’s past. #bigskycountry #historicplaces #undergroundtour #hiddengem #travelusa🇺🇸 ♬ Mountain Folk Lullaby - The Chilliout Folk

Some of the more questionable businesses include a brothel, opium dens, and the underground area was also used to smuggle alcohol during prohibition. One of the really cool parts of the story is that the "underground town" is available for tours. In fact, they have their own website, which includes a little about the history as well as the chance to book tickets for a tour.
