If you are at all into music, you know the Grateful Dead. They started in the 1960s and became one of the most influential jam bands in American music history. Their blend of psychedelic rock, folk, blues and improvisation broke rules and built a community of fans famously known as ‘Deadheads.’

Bob Weir was not just a founding member. He helped shape the band’s sound and spirit for over six decades. He sadly passed away January 10th at the age of 78.
Weir was diagnosed with cancer in July 2025 and initially beat it, but ultimately died from lung issues. According to his family statement posted on his Instagram, he passed peacefully surrounded by loved ones.

Fans around the globe are mourning, sharing memories, and celebrating his legacy. Even here in the town of Livingston, Montana, listeners of all ages gathered at the Murray Bar last night (1/15).  I attend along with many others to celebrate Weir’s life the way he lived it: with music, cold beers and dancing. It did not matter whether you were young or old. People came together in a way that only music, especially Grateful Dead music, seems to make possible.
