With the World Series here, the country is preparing for the Yankees against the Dodgers in what, if nothing else, will be a lesson in extravagance as two of the world's richest teams compete in what is arguably sports' biggest stage. Something from which we are far removed since the Butte Copper Kings left town all those years ago.

With the American Legion baseball regular season coming to a close, Butte sports fans are going to be without baseball for the latter part of the summer. Again. With the exception of whatever in the hell you want to call the Mining City Tommyknockers' season a few years back, we have to go way back to the days of the Copper Kings when talking about August baseball. And the Copper Kings exit was no walk in the park either. Casper, Wyoming, you can kiss my antennae. And by default, you too, Grand Rapids. But this got me to thinking not only about the Tommyknockers and the Copper Kings, but about the number of other franchises not only in baseball but in other sports as well that have come and gone here in the Mining City. Remember the Daredevils? The Butte Irish? Anyone? Anyone?
