Today, Monday, March 31, is the deadline to apply for this year's awarding of the Mariah's Challenge Scholarship which, in addition to helping a great deal with the rising costs of post-secondary education, puts those who accept it on a path free of alcohol or drugs.

WHAT IS MARIAH'S CHALLENGE?

Mariah's Challenge was established by Leo McCarthy and his family almost immediately after the senseless death in October of 2007 of their daughter and sister, Mariah Daye McCarthy at the hands of a hit-and-run drunk driver.  The McCarthy's do not want other families to ever go through what they have had to endure.  They want our youth to "grow old", and abstinence from drugs and alcohol greatly increases the odds of doing so.

Right on the Mariah's Challenge website, you will find that accepting the challenge is simple:

  • If you are under 21, do not drink and never get in a car with somebody who has been drinking.
  • If you are over 21, do not drink and drive, and be a good role model for our children. If you sell alcohol, check IDs, train your employees to obey the law, and keep alcohol out of the hands of our children.
  • If you are a part of our justice system, enforce our laws and keep our children safe.

While everyone can benefit from "accepting Mariah's Challenge", our area youth are eligible for something more.

Mariah’s Challenge provides the opportunity for applicants to earn a one-time, non-renewable scholarship in an amount determined by the organization. Scholarships are sent directly to the institution the student will attend. The funds may be used for tuition, books, fees, supplies, and room and board.

All area high school students are eligible, and you can find complete details and registration information here.
