One Of Montana’s Best Golf Courses Is Now Open

The weather is finally starting to take a turn for the better, and that means it is time to break out the golf clubs and get ready for a summer on the links.

The Old Works in Anaconda has announced that today is their opening day.

One of Montana’s finest golf courses and one of the nicest public golf courses in the nation is ready for you and your golf crew.

The dream of building a world-class course on the site of a former super fund cleanup started in 1989. It took 5 years of incredibly hard work by the community of Anaconda, ARCO, state and federal agencies, along with golf legend Jack Nicklaus to finally break ground in the spring of 1994.

This video is an outstanding bit of history, and worth a watch.

The first Jack Nicklaus signature designed course in Montana had to be one of his most challenging. Built over one of the largest Superfund waste areas in America, the course incorporates many historic relics of the copper smelting history of Anaconda to mark its individuality. The most noticeable, and groundbreaking is the slag. The slag, a byproduct of the copper smelting process, is featured in all the bunkers on the course, an incredible contrast to the white sand used across the rest of the golf world.

The Old Works was designed for everyone. Nicklaus incorporated 5 sets of tees for each hole allowing the course to play from 5290 yards to over 7700 yards, allowing the player to decide on the level of challenge they want to experience.

The Old Works is a breathtaking course in both its beauty and it’s design, and we are lucky it’s right here in Southwest Montana.
