Orediggers to face the Westmont Warriors in the first round. Who are they?
Now that the matchups are set for the first round of the NAIA National Basketball tournament, let's see what the Orediggers are up against this Tuesday night when they host the Westmont Warriors at 7pm at Kelvin Sampson Court. But what do we know about Westmont?
Westmont College is a private Christian liberal arts college in Montecito, California. Their basketball team will come to Butte as an at-large bid with a 17-11 overall record. They compete in the Golden State Athletic Conference and were ousted in the conference tournament's quarterfinal round by eventual champion Ottawa University-Arizona. Westmont has had one common opponent with Montana Tech this season, a team that they have played twice this year, the Arizona Christian Firestorm. They won 85-72 in overtime at home on November 17 and lost on the road, 69-68 on January 21. The Orediggers faced Arizona Christian on the road on November 25 and suffered one of only four losses on the year, 84-80.
Westmont puts up an impressive 81.9 points per game while allowing only 72.1. They are led in scoring by junior forward Anthony McIntyre's 14.5 points per game, senior forward Kade Roth's 12.4 and junior guard Amir Davis' 11.5. Davis is also the team's leading rebounder. They are a very streaky team this season. Prior to their GSAC tournament loss they had put together a 5-game winning streak, but that followed a 4-game losing streak. The Warriors also suffered a 5-game losing streak to end the calendar year and have a 7-6 record when on the road.
Tickets for the Westmont/Montana Tech NAIA National Tournament game go on sale Monday at the HPER and you can find complete information here.
