Next week, Butte’s elementary schools will light up with laughter and reading as students embrace a special story together. It’s a community affair you won’t want to miss.
McKinley was one of a handful of schools that were closed down throughout the 1980s after the closure of the Berkeley Pit as Butte's population fell and the old West Junior High became the consolidated West Elementary. It got me to thinking about the students, the teachers and everyone involved with some of those schools. How many of you were students at these old Butte Elementary schools?
The Butte School District is teaming with teachers and students to create, from scratch if you'll pardon the pun, a "School District Cookbook", a collection of recipes and artwork contributed by Butte students and also a visual history of the Butte School District and its role throughout Butte's History. Proceeds from the cookbook will be deposited in the district's "Angel Fund" which is an account that helps pay for breakfast and lunch for students who have outstanding balances.
