Orphan Girl Mine presents Underground Music Series, announces lineup
As far as underground music scenes go, I'd like to see Austin, TX or Seattle, WA touch this one. The Orphan Girl Mine on the campus of the World Museum of Mining in Butte is hosting a live music series featuring local musicians that will take place on the actual 100-foot level of the Orphan Girl Mine. Literally underground. Right in front of the actual shaft that used to raise and lower miners and supplies deep into the rich underbelly of Butte's underground mining system. It doesn't get much more underground than that. There's even a sign still hanging that used to tell miners which bell they needed to ring in order to get the cage to come and get them. And the bell still works. Seriously.
The "concert" area is the cavern leading up to the mine shaft and although it's a bit eerie, a lot of work has been done to make the area more secure (and pretty) for those who venture into the darkness on a tour, or in this case, a concert.
The 2025 Orphan Girl Mine Underground Music Series has been announced and the first show is coming up on August 12th. As you can imagine, seating will be very limited as well as extremely unorthodox. Hard hats will be required, open-toed shoes will not be allowed and guests must be over the age of 12, but the reward is being able to see a show in a setting that is truly unique to Butte, one that is incredibly historical and one that you will remember for the rest of your life.
Here is the list of this year's performers.
- August 12th - Me & Thee
- August 26 - High Ore Road
- September 9 - Tom Susanj
- September 23 - Marlene Holland Murdo & Edwin Johnson
Tickets are very limited but are available now. Interested in going? All proceeds will be going to the World Museum of Mining and improvements/upgrades/maintenance on the Orphan Girl Underground Mine Tour. The artists are donating their time and talents as well.
