We're going to warn you, although this tour is completely safe it is not one for the faint of heart.  But if you can handle tight surroundings, complete darkness save for the lights on your mandatory helmets and want to get just a taste of what life was like in the underground mines of Butte, you simply need to take the underground mine tour at Butte's World Museum of Mining.  You will see the Orphan Girl Mine in a way not seen since her days of operation.

It may be a bit much to say that this will give you the full experience of a day in the life of a Butte miner but it will certainly make you appreciate what a typical day was like.

VENTURE TO THE 100-FOOT LEVEL OF THE ORPHAN GIRL MINE

You will start out on a steady decline as the sunlight gradually fades from sight and through a series of twist and turns, drifts an cutouts, you will make your way to the actual cage used by the miners to descend to the shaft of the Orphan Girl mine's various levels.  It's incredible.
