Summer Camp is set starting June 9th and will run weekdays from 7:30am to 6pm through August 22nd with a fresh theme, swimming and activities planned for each week. Matt Rundle of the YMCA said that the popular program is accepting registration now at 2975 Washoe or online at butteymca.org. Rundle told us that teaching swimming and safety around water will be a big part of the curriculum. " Statistics show that in Montana, the primary cause of fatalities in kids under 10 are accidents around water," Rundle told us, "So that is a big thing, we want to teach kids how to swim and to keep them safe during the summer. We want everybody to learn how to swim. That's a big thing for us."
The YMCA's Summer Day Camp will not be limited to swimming, though, as many more activities are planned. "At our summer camp, we are actually building a basketball court and are going to be holding a basketball tournament along with an archery tournament," Rundle said, adding that programs will be in place to help keep young minds fresh as well. "We are introducing a math and reading program that is going to help kids feel comfortable, " Rundle said. " We'll take little steps with kindergarteners through sixth graders to help them learn something this summer but not overdo it."
Rundle told us parents should not let a lack of money prevent their children from experience the YMCA's Summer Day Camp, or any of the Y's programs. "We are more than willing to work with parents who are facing hardship, to help them put their kids in a safe and comfortable environment this summer."
