Labor Day Weekend Outdoor Opportunities in Southwest Montana
Although the long Labor Day holiday weekend signals the unofficial beginning of fall, in Southwest Montana there are still plenty of opportunities for us to enjoy the great outdoors even with the changing of the seasons. We had a chance to sit down with local forester and recreation enthusiast Jocelyn Dodge to chat about what the end of summer means for campers, fishermen and outdoor enthusiasts.
"Labor Day means fall is coming but many campgrounds will remain open for fall getaways," she told us. But even though the area's campgrounds can be taken advantage of, Dodge reminds us to be very aware of our surroundings, particularly when it comes to campfires. "Fire danger remains high across Southwest Montana with Stage One restrictions still in place; however, fishing restrictions have been lifted on many rivers and there are numerous lakes to cast a line."
Fall in Southwest Montana also means that weather conditions are unpredictable and can quickly change and as such, Dodge says it's important to keep your eyes open and to know what to look for. "Enjoy your outdoor adventure and as always, be aware of changing weather conditions including high winds, lightning and smoky skies," she said. And what about fire safety? "Carry a bucket and shovel to help protect our public lands and report any unattended fires and smoke," was her advice to those venturing outdoors over the holiday weekend.
