All one needs to do is look outside to see that fire season has come to our region, particularly Southwest Montana where several forest fires are presently burning.  The smoke in Southwest Montana has been particularly thick and hot, dry weather has settled in over the past couple of weeks.  This increased danger does not mean the end of summer outdoor recreation, but it does mean that you will need to be mindful of conditions and vigilant in preventing wildfires when venturing onto public lands.  We sat down with local forester and outdoor recreation enthusiast, Jocelyn Dodge, who offered advice on the steps that need to be taken.

"There is more summer fun to enjoy but if you plan on re-creating or camping outdoors on public lands, please be aware Stage One Fire Restrictions are now in place on the beaver head Deer Lodge national forest," Dodge told us, but said that recreation opportunities remain in nearby areas.  "Campgrounds, day-use areas and trails remain open at this time but beware of change in weather conditions, including high winds, lightning and smoky skies."

If you plan on recreating, Dodge told us there are some necessary items to bring along with you and things you need to look out for.  "When enjoying the outdoors use, caution and carry a bucket and shovel, help protect our public lands and report any unattended fires or smoke."
