Inaugural Helsinki Thunder Run set for Saturday, July 26th
"Butte's always been a biker's town," Greg McDonald told me a couple of days ago when we were discussing the upcoming Helsinki Thunder Run which is set for Saturday, July 26th at the Helsinki Bar, 402 E. Broadway. Greg is the man behind the event and he's got a point. Of course, Butte is the birthplace of a cultural icon in Evel Knievel who had an entire generation of kids constructing ramps out of 2x4s and bricks while launching himself to superstardom at places like Caesar's Palace, the Snake River Canyon and London's Wembley Stadium.
In the early 2000s, Evel Knievel Days in Uptown Butte became a roaring success with motorcycle acrobatics, live music, street vendors and even and incredible stunts, everything from the late, great Robbie Knievel jumping on Park Street to Spanky Spangler lighting himself on fire and jumping off the roof of the Finlen Hotel. It was crazy.
