Montana Tech got its 2024 volleyball season underway in impressive fashion Thursday with a sweep of the Doane Tigers.  The following is from the Montana Tech Sports Information Department:

The #21 ranked Montana Tech Orediggers started their season with an impressive straight-set victory over the Doane Tigers, winning 25-16, 25-20, 25-18 in the opening match of the Big Sky Volleyball Challenge. This match marked the first of the season for both teams, setting the tone for what promises to be an exciting tournament.

Montana Tech showcased a dominant performance both offensively and defensively. The Orediggers hit a solid .306 for the match, a stark contrast to Doane's .098. Junior Kinnidi Willmore led the charge for Montana Tech with 13 kills, hitting an impressive .379. She was supported by the defensive prowess of Olivia LaBeau, who notched 10 blocks, and newcomer Abby Clark, who added 9 kills to the Orediggers' tally.

Rhys Layton was pivotal in orchestrating the offense, finishing with 40 assists, ensuring a smooth flow in the Orediggers' attack. On the defensive side, Brooklyn Hayes and Emmy Green held down the back row with 10 and 7 digs, respectively, helping to stifle the Tigers' offense.

The Doane Tigers, despite the loss, had standout performances from Kayden Schumacher and Taylor Sluka, who each contributed 8 kills. Grace Zeier led the defense for Doane with 10 digs, but the Tigers struggled to find consistency against the Orediggers' formidable block, only managing 4 blocks compared to Montana Tech's 10.

With this victory, Montana Tech looks ahead to their next match against Dakota Wesleyan on Friday at 2 pm on Kelvin Sampson Court. They will conclude the tournament on Saturday with a showdown against Loyola University of New Orleans at 11 am at the Butte Civic Center. The Orediggers will aim to build on this strong start as they continue their campaign in the Big Sky Volleyball Challenge.
