Popular West Side Mexican Restaurant La Sirena Shuts Down This Weekend
For residents of Butte’s west side, the road construction that currently has Platinum Street shut down is certainly a headache. It’s closure, though, may be a blessing in disguise because as of 11am on Thursday morning there was already a line of cars stretching from Gold Street, nearly 2 blocks up, to the drive-thru of La Sirena, Butte’s immensely-popular, independently-owned Mexican restaurant that has announced its’ final day of operation will be this Saturday, September 3rd.

La Sirena has operated for years in the space previously occupied by the Dairy Queen Brazier and you may ask why they are going out of business if they are so popular? Many people in Butte are. Dairy Queen had been in business at that location since the early 1980s. I remember it well. I grew up 3 blocks east of it, just up from Chester Steele. The DQ was THE place for burgers, Dilly Bars and the Centipede video game machine they had next to the seating area. Yeah, they had a seating area. That is something La Sirena was never afforded by local powers-that-be. They couldn’t offer indoor dining. They weren’t allowed to expand their refrigeration areas that would have led to expansion. They encountered road block after road block due to, what I understand, are zoning restrictions. I’m not sure what political verbiage is being used but it sure seems strange to be having ribbon-cutting ceremonies for new, corporate franchises that are popping up all over town while another mom-and-pop business is essentially being forced to close it’s doors.
