Get your motor runnin'...head out on the highway... but first, check the road conditions!

It's winter in Montana, and the snow isn't letting up anytime soon. There were 207 interstate fatalities in 2022, and 2023 is not off to a great start with12 fatalities on Montana highways so far in 2023, compared to 11 fatalities for this same time in 2022.

While the state provides us with very detailed road condition information via the MDOT 511 app and even live cameras of the passes, who doesn't love personal experience?

If you're anything like me, you can look at cameras all day long, but it pales in comparison to hearing from someone who just went over Homestake Pass and can tell you exactly what to expect.

The Montana Road and Weather Conditions Reports Updates Facebook page is a gathering place of regular, statewide, factual and up-to-the-minute information. Here, you can ask conditions questions of drivers that have recently traveled the direction you are heading, review posts and pictures travelers have shared, and even share your own experiences with other travelers seeking information. Find out about pass or road closures, accidents, slick spots or even if the roads are better than you might have thought.

Rely on your trusted friends and neighbors to help you safely plan your next road trip. Just do us all a favor, though: when someone asks for conditions, don't be the "go to the 511" guy. WE. KNOW.
