Oredigger Football claims Frontier Conference’s Team of Character Award nomination

Another accolade for the Montana Tech Athletic Department and the football team in particular.  But this nomination is about more that wins, losses or championships.  This one is about character.  The following is a release from the Montana Tech Sports Information Department:

HELENA, Mont. -  Head coach Kyle Samson's Orediggers had another fantastic year on the gridiron in 2024, playing to a 9-3 record and reaching the NAIA postseason for a second-consecutive season. Tech earned the right to play host to a second-round playoff game and concluded the year ranked No. 10 in the coaches' top 25 poll.

Just as important as success on the field was the team's involvement in the Butte community. The team volunteers weekly at the Butte Furniture Bank; led an on-campus initiative with Be the Match, a directory for cancer patients in need of matches for bone marrow transplants; and volunteer efforts with Butte Public Schools and local children's track & field meets, among others.

"The Frontier Conference Team of Character honor is a powerful reflection of the Montana Tech football program and the culture Coach Samson and his staff have built," Orediggers athletic director Matt Stepan said. "Grounded in discipline, accountability, and service, this team continues to lead by example both on and off the field. Coach Samson's leadership has fostered an environment where character is expected, developed, and celebrated. Our student-athletes consistently represent Montana Tech with integrity and pride, and this recognition affirms their commitment to excellence in all areas."

The NAIA Conference Commissioners Association Champions of Character Team Award is given annually to one men's and one women's team for their exemplary character on the field, on campus, and in the community. The nationwide honor will be announced in September on NAIA National Awards day.
