
Two Oredigger Netters snare Frontier ‘Player of the Week’ honors
It's a good week to be an Oredigger. In addition to going 4-0 at the Frontier Preseason Tournament and holding down the #11 ranking in the NAIA, a pair of Diggers gained recognition as a Frontier Conference Player of the Week. The following is from the Montana Tech Athletic Department.
Helena, Mont.- The Frontier Conference has announced their volleyball players of the week, and two Orediggers have made the grade.
Senior outside hitter Maureen Jessop has been named the attacker of the week, and Freshman setter Rhys Layton has been awarded the setter of the week.
The 11th ranked Orediggers went 4-0 at the Frontier Conference Preseason Tournament, with five set wins over Montana Western and Rocky Mountain College, a four-set win over MSU-Northern, and a three-set sweep of Carroll College.
Maureen Jessop, an outside hitter from Corvallis, Montana, was selected as attacker of the week after tallying 63 kills over the four games in Dillon. In sixteen sets, Jesssop averaged 3.71 kills per set, highlighted by 27 kills, and a 5.4 kps against Rocky Mountain. She also added .41 blocks and 1.47 digs per set. Rhys Layton, a freshman setter from Eagle, Idaho, was selected as the setter of the week. Rhys amassed 175 assists in 17 sets, with an average of 10.29 assists per set. Much like Jessop, her high-water mark came in a five-set win over Rocky, where she tallied 56 total assists, which is a career high. Rhys also added 2.24 digs per set.
The Orediggers will start their Frontier Conference regular season Friday September 29th on the road against the University of Providence. Their first conference matches at home will be September 29th and the 30TH, against MSU-Northern and Rocky respectively.
