Annual Lutefisk Dinner set for December 7th at Gold Hill Lutheran Church
For many of us the Holiday Season means decorations, Christmas Carols and treats such as hot cocoa, cookies and gingerbread men. For others, particularly those of Scandinavian descent, the holidays mean it's time to enjoy lutefisk. Enjoy may or may not be the correct term but in any case, the Daughters of Norway and the Gold Hill Lutheran Church are excited to present the Annual Lutefisk or Swedish Meatball Dinner on Saturday, December 7th taking place at the Church at 934 Placer Street.
First things first, though. What is lutefisk? The website visitnorway.com describes it as the most quintessentially Norwegian Christmas Dinner but admits that even Norwegians are divided on it's culinary status. It seems either you love it or you hate it. Lutefisk is simply stockfish that has been soaked in water, placed in lye and then soaked in water again until it becomes gelatinous. You can be the judge yourself at next Saturday's dinner.
One of the things that all can agree upon is that the magic of the dinner lies in the side dishes which this year will include pickled herring as the main appetizer and in addition to lutefisk as the side dish, you can choose Swedish Meatballs to go alongside boiled potatoes, carrots, beets and lefse. For dessert, enjoy Norwegian Cookies, traditional fruit soup and Rommegrot Pudding.
Dinner will run from 3pm to 7pm and is $20 for adults, $13 for kids 12 and under. If you have any questions or would like further details, please call Bev Becker at 406-490-8332 or Mike Lawson at 406-560-3591.
