Get Ready For Fireworks And Keep Your Pets Safe

We can see the fireworks stands being set up all across town and if you're a pet owner, this is a good reminder to make sure that you and your furry pal or pals are set to make it through.  It doesn't take much to startle many house pets and the days around Independence Day are the days that a higher number of pets than usual go missing.

One of the most important things you can do as a pet owner is to have your pet micro-chipped and to make sure they are wearing collars with your phone number.  This is by far the easiest and most effective way of reuniting lost pets with their anxious owners.

BE CAREFUL OF WHAT THEY EAT

The ASPCA notes that around barbecues and fireworks, dogs can ingest many things that can be harmful including fireworks themselves.  Be especially mindful that dogs and onions do not mix so please don't feed the dog your burger leftovers.

MAKE SURE THERE ARE NO OPEN GATES OR EXITS

When you let your dog out to do their thing, be particularly mindful of open gates or other exits where a startled dog could escape.  While noise phobias are less common in cats, they too can be startled and it is recommended that you keep your cats indoors during fireworks season.

Anti anxiety medicine can help in extreme cases but sometimes providing a calm, quiet room for your dog or cat can prove to be just as effective.
