Don’t forget your pet’s safety during the upcoming cold snap
Weekend temperatures are expected to get down to at least -20 and people are scrambling for their extra blankets, extension cords for the engine block heater and plenty of chicken soup for the pantry. As the mercury drops, don't forget to keep your furry family member safe and comfortable. Here are a few things to remember.
DON'T LEAVE THEM OUTSIDE
This shouldn't have to be said but every cold snap, there are pets who are left to brave the weather outside and this is animal cruelty, plain and simple. If you are cold, they are cold, and comfort aside, cold weather can be deadly. Make sure all of your pets are inside and when they need to go outside, make sure it's for not more than 10 minutes.
MAKE SURE THEY HAVE PLENTY OF FOOD AND WATER
In cold weather, pets need extra energy to keep warm so make sure they have plenty of food and water throughout the day.
BUNDLE THEM UP
If your pet is going to be outside for any extended period of time it is a good idea to put an extra layer on them and a set of pet boots for their paws will also help keep them warm and dry. Speaking of paws...
CLEAN THEIR PAWS WHEN THEY COME IN
In winter your pets can walk through many different, deadly things like ice melter and even antifreeze, which is deadly. Get a wet towel or washrag to clean your pet's paws when they come in from the outside.
