Huge news for Oredigger Basketball
The Montana Tech Men’s basketball team will be hosting NAIA National Tournament games at the HPER, on March 7th and 8th.
There will be 16 host sites for the first 2 rounds of tournament games, each host site will have 4 teams playing in a single elimination ‘pod’ on March 7 & 8. The tournament will start with a total of 64 teams, which will be whittled down to 16 by the end of the 2-day event, with the remaining 16 teams traveling to the final tournament site in Kansas City, Missouri March 13-18.
This will be the second year in a row that the Orediggers of Montana Tech advance to the National Tournament. Last year the Diggs went 1-1 in Waxahachie, Texas. Montana Tech beat Mid-America Christian 71-67 before falling 77-63 to SAGU in the Round of 32. The win over Mid-America Christian was the first NAIA National Tournament win in school history.
Before they can focus on the National Tournament, the Diggs have to prepare for the Frontier Conference Tournament. Montana Tech enters the Frontier Conference Tournament as the #1 seed after winning the regular season with a 12-3 record. That #1 seed gives them a first-round bye and an automatic trip to the semifinals, where they will play the lowest remaining seed that wins the Sunday games between Rocky vs. Carroll, and Northern vs. Western. The winner of the Frontier Tournament gets an automatic bid into the National tournament which might be the only way for most of the conference to extend their season.
Once again the Frontier Tournament will be played in Great Falls at 4-seasons this coming weekend, with first-round games on Sunday, Semi-finals on Monday, and Championship games on Tuesday night. Full information can be found on the Frontier Conference website.
