Winter Sports season in the Mining City officially is underway and teams from Butte Central High School will be jumping in with both feet this weekend. And maybe a wrestling singlet or two.

The Butte Central Maroons boys basketball team probably has the biggest challenge of all Butte teams this weekend as they will meet Lewistown at the Frenchtown Tipoff Tournament at 6pm tonight at Frenchtown High School. You may remember it was the Golden Eagles who got the business end of Dougie Peoples' "Shot Heard Round the State" last March in the championship game where the Maroons wrapped up their second State Championship in three years under Head Coach Brodie Kelly. It is a safe bet that the Golden Eagles have had a big, red circle on tomorrow's date on the calendar since the moment the schedule was released and they return many from last year's State runners-up. Butte Central, while losing two starters to graduation, still bring back forward Kyle Holter and post Eric Loos along with the aforementioned Peoples. Many are predicting that this will be the final game of both teams' seasons as well as the first. The BC Boys will take on Bigfork in their second game of the season Saturday, 6pm at Frenchtown Middle School. Bigfork is led by former BC standout John Hollow.

On the girls side, Butte Central will also meet Lewistown in the first game of the Frenchtown tournament which will be at the middle school tonight at 7:30. They will play in the nightcap Saturday, 7:30 in the high school verses the Bigfork Vikings. What do we know about the girls? They return senior Brooke Badovinac who rewrote Butte basketball scoring history last season and will welcome new head coach Quinn (Peoples) Carter who brings championship experience as a player and an assistant coach under the legendary Meg Murphy to the Lady Maroons program. If current trends continue, the Maroons will be a scrappy bunch who will play to the final buzzer.

Wrestling Season is also officially underway as the Butte Central mixer was held last night and the Maroons jump into competition today at the Whitehall Duals.  Head Coach John Stillwagon's teams have a reputation for being tough competitors despite their historically low numbers.  Best of luck to all Butte Central teams from Townsquare Media-Butte.
