When you imagine what the 4th of July is like in small-town America, the picture that pops into your head may very be well one of what's really happening in the Big Hole Valley this 4th of July. From an early-morning flag raising ceremony to fireworks to close out the day, make your way to Wisdom if you want a celebration away from the city this Independence Day.

University of Providence signee and present-day East Helena pitcher Belle Surginer blasted a three-run homer in the third inning and the Butte Central Maroons were unable to overcome the deficit, falling 9-5 to the East Helena Vigilantes Tuesday evening at Stodden Park.

As graduation draws closer and closer, spring activities in the Mining City are moving towards the postseason as we look towards divisional meets and state tournaments. Here is a look at what's on the slate for the Bulldogs and Maroons this week.

You can count on seeing team buses from all over the state all over town this Friday and Saturday as the 2023 LaVerne Combo Softball Invitational makes its annual return. Teams from Class A and Class B along with the AA Butte High Junior Varsity will see action starting at noon Friday and before things wrap up Saturday evening, 48 games will have taken place on 5 fields.

The Butte Central Maroons will be busy on the home diamonds this week as the baseball team will host an early pair and the softball team will host one of the state's biggest softball tournaments later in the week. The Tennis and Track & Field teams will also be in action.

The warm weather is a welcome sight, particularly to those in charge of scheduling Butte High and Butte Central activities. After delays, postponements and cancellations we are keeping our fingers crossed for the warm stretch to continue as the Bulldogs and Maroons look to get things rolling.

The folks in Melrose are ready for some fun this Saturday and area softball players, enthusiasts and fans will want to take note of this one. It's the inaugural "Pasture Party" co-ed softball tournament this Saturday starting at 9am in beautiful Melrose, Montana.

Butte Central has released their weekly activities schedule and are looking to finally see some action on the diamonds after cancellations and postponements have dominated the early part of the season.

Mother Nature continues to dominate the sports schedules this spring. There were several changes to the schedule coming into this week, and as of today (4/12) we have several more for both Butte High and Butte Central.

We are seeing how difficult it is to host any form of Spring sporting event in Butte when Spring refuses to show up for more than a couple of hours at a time. But it has to come eventually, right? Butte Central certainly hopes so as they have home contests scheduled for baseball and softball while the track and field teams have meets scheduled in the Mining City as well as Missoula.
