With the World Series here, the country is preparing for the Yankees against the Dodgers in what, if nothing else, will be a lesson in extravagance as two of the world's richest teams compete in what is arguably sports' biggest stage.  Something from which we are far removed since the Butte Copper Kings left town all those years ago.

Do you remember the Butte Copper Kings?  Growing up in Butte, especially on the Hill, you'd see dozens of Butte kids on bikes sporting the new batting helmets they got the previous night as a promotional giveaway.  There was Batting Helmet Night which was always popular.  I remember the blue ones and the copper ones, each sporting the smiling, bearded, crowned Copper King mascot who I always thought more resembled Prince Vultan from the Flash Gordon movie than an actual Copper King.  But I digress.  There was Wristband Nite.  There was Mini Bat Nite where the 1000 or so bats that were handed out would make the metal grandstand at Alumni Coliseum ring and rattle like Candlestick Park during the earthquake of 1987.  There were autograph sessions.  Good times.

What do you remember about the Butte Copper Kings?  How about the miniature plastic helmets that they would use as a french fry cup?  Every Major League team's helmet was there, right behind the counter.  I can still taste the obscene amount of ketchup I would use.  There was quarter beer night which would inevitably lead to a, well, boisterous crowd during the later innings that some of you may remember.  Some of you may very well not.

The Copper Kings produced several players who made it all the way to the Big Leagues but it's the big-league memories that they provided so long ago that we all miss the most.   Here's what became of them.
