Elementary students across the Mining City will be opening the same book at the same time next week as part of a new district-wide effort to promote early literacy and community involvement.

All public elementary schools in Butte will be the site of a community-wide reading event being hosted by the Butte School District.  The event is designed to bring students, families and community members together around a shared reading experience all while encouraging a love of books among young learners.

The featured book for the project is Who is the Super Ultra Mega Special Super Special Guest?, an imaginative children's book that was selected due to its playful tone and positive message.  Every kindergarten through second-grade student in the Butte School District will receive a personal copy of the book to take home and read with their families thanks to a generous grant from the Town Pump Charitable Foundation.  In addition to the book, families will receive simple "parent homework" activities intended to support home reading and to spark meaningful conversation about the story.

On January 14th, community volunteers will visit classrooms to read the book aloud with students, creating a shared moment across all elementary schools.  District leaders say the goal is not only to build literacy skills, but also to strengthen connections between schools, families and the greater community.

"This initiative is about more than books -- it's about connection and collaboration," said Jennifer Luoma, principal of Margaret Leary Elementary.  "Reading together strengthens not only academic skills, but also encourages play and having fun with literacy."

School officials are hoping the event will help establish positive reading habits early and reinforce the idea that learning extends beyond the classroom.

Community members interested in learning more about the project or finding ways to support the initiative can contact Luoma at Margaret Leary Elementary at (406) 533-2550 or by email at luomajj@bsd1.org.
