Coach Lindsay Woolley resigns from UM Western

The Frontier Conference was blindsided by another resignation earlier today.

Following the announcement last week that Carroll College Men’s Basketball coach Kurt Paulson would be stepping down, Montana Western Women’s Head Basketball Coach Lindsay Woolley has resigned.

That one comes in like a fist to the jaw. To say that Coach Woolley has been successful is an understatement. To say that Coach Woolley made the conference better also undersells his contributions.

In my years calling games, there are very few coaches (that I’ve seen) that get the level of ‘buy-in’ from their players that Lindsey does. You know going into every game, his team will bring constant pressure for 40 minutes, they will take no plays off, and they won’t give up on anything. Every Bulldog game under his watch could be a coaching video on work ethic.

Coach Woolley took over the Bulldog program before the 2011-2012 season. In his 12 seasons as coach, Woolley has amassed a record of 230 wins and 142 losses. (62%-win percentage) Over those 12 years, the Bulldogs only finished a season with a losing record twice.

This is where it starts to get a little unreal: The Bulldogs made it to the NAIA National Tournament in seven of his twelve seasons. Racking up 13 wins at the NAIA National Tournament, as opposed to only 5 losses. Five of those wins came in 2019 when the Bulldogs won the National Title. Holding a 60% - winning percentage at the National Tournament is just ridiculous, trust me.

According to the UM Western release “Woolley has coached 12 players who have become first, second, third team or honorable mention All-Americans. Three Frontier Conference Players of the Year, two Frontier Conference Defensive Player of the Year, A Frontier freshman of the year, 29 all-conference selections, 36 Daktronics Scholar-Athletes, and 87 academic all-conference selections”

Lindsay Woolley was named the NAIA Coach of the Year in 2019.

The Frontier Conference is the strongest, and most competitive conference in the nation, due to our incredible coaches, coaches like Lindsay Woolley. The Frontier Conference owes him a debt of gratitude, he made us all better.
