Is ICE targeting Native Americans in Montana? Here’s what Senator Daines has to say.
The issue of border security is a hot one in Montana, especially with the inauguration of Donald J. Trump as our 47th President and his efforts to stop illegal immigration at our southern border. Law enforcement officers here in Montana as well as our own U.S. Senator Steve Daines have pointed at lax security and illegal border crossings as a chief cause of, among many other crimes, the fentanyl and human trafficking crisis that we are seeing right here in Montana. "The cartels literally own the supply chain of fentanyl and human trafficking that begin in Mexico, cross the southern border and arrive into Montana. The Mexican cartels are operating in Montana as we speak," Senator Daines told Townsquare Media-Butte this morning.
Over the last week, Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents across the country have conducted several raids resulting in thousands of arrests, some right here in Montana. This has raised concern among some Montanans who are claiming that ICE officials may be acting illegally and targeting Native Americans.
Senator Daines said that this simply is not true. "The lies are out there but it is simply not true," Daines told us. "Unequivocally, Native Americans are not going to be deported. It's not happening," he added noting that tribal leaders in Montana are echoing his sentiment. "Jeffrey Stiffarm, the president of Fort Belknap, he issued a statement saying this is not correct," Daines said while noting we must be careful of what we see online. "That's one of the challenges we face with social media today, it is such a powerful, influencing tool, but lies are spread and lies spread fast," he said, adding, "it's important that the people of Montana get the truth."
