The 9th annual 2023 NCAA March Madness Calcutta to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, is on March 15th, at the Butte Country Club.

All 68 teams in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament will be auctioned off to the highest bidder. 90% of the total bids will be paid back to participating bidders, and 10% will be donated to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

The public (18 and older) is welcome to attend the event starting at 5:30. Registration will open when the doors do, and appetizers will also be served. The auction itself will take place at 7:30.

This fundraiser, like many others nationwide, is for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. The CF Foundation is not a government-subsidized entity, meaning they have to raise their own funds to continue to add tomorrows for thousands of people around the country.

Cystic Fibrosis is a progressive, genetic disease that affects the lungs, pancreas, and other organs. People with CF have a mutation in a gene that causes cells to not move/attract water correctly, making the mucus in the various organs thick and sticky. That thick and sticky mucus in the lungs clogs airways and traps germs leading to infections, respiratory failure, and other complications.

The mucus in the pancreas prevents the release of digestive enzymes that helps the body absorb food and nutrients. Resulting in malnutrition and poor growth.

You can read more about Cystic Fibrosis as well as the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation HERE. That will give you a good idea of what we are raising money for.

Last year the Butte Calcutta wrote a check to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation to the tune of $39,730. Over the past 8 events, over $184,000 has been raised. An incredible sum of money, made possible by all the people who take part in the Calcutta.

Speaking of an incredible sum of money, last year’s winners, the team that ‘purchased’ Kansas, won $62,480 dollars. The group that had the Tar Heels of North Carolina (who fell to Kansas in the chipper), walked away with $29,990 dollars.

So gather your team, and get ready for the 9th annual NCAA March Madness Calcutta benefitting the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Wednesday, March 15th at the Butte Country Club.

LOOK: The story behind every NFL team name

Stacker delved into the story behind every NFL football team name. Overall team records, also included, are reflective of NFL regular-season games. There are some football teams with well-known nicknames—the Jets, for instance, are often referred to as Gang Green—but we also divulge how some teams’ official names are sparingly used (the Jets’ neighbors, the Giants, are actually known as the New York Football Giants). Sometimes a team name can tell you a lot about local history: The Vikings of Minnesota draw upon the area’s strong ties to Scandinavia, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are dripping in local legend related to Florida’s pirate past.

Let’s kick off the countdown with the folks who earned their nickname by buying boxes of used team jerseys.

To celebrate the history of international sports cooperation, Stacker took a look back at that groundbreaking event in Athens, when the modern Olympics were born in 1896. Keep reading to learn more about the athletes, spectators, and sports at that iconic event.
