Veterans Navigation Network Honors Jay Wood with Q2 2025 Salute to Service Award
Recently we were talking about the big Southwest Montana Veterans Food Pantry & Services Poker Run that is coming up later this summer. In fact, we've talked about a lot of things that the folks at the Food Pantry have done over the years. Well, that work is being recognized by the Veterans Navigation Network as Mr. Jay Wood is being honored in a big way. The following is a release from the VNN.
Billings, MT — The Veterans Navigation Network (VNN) is proud to announce that Jay Wood, Co-Founder and President of the Southwest Montana Veterans Food Pantry & Services in Deer Lodge, has been named the recipient of the Q2 2025 Salute to Service Award. This quarterly recognition honors individuals who go above and beyond in their commitment to improving the lives of veterans and their families. The award, made possible by an anonymous donor, includes a slate award plaque, a $100 gift card for a restaurant of the honoree’s choice, and public recognition through VNN’s website, newsletter, and social media platforms.
Jay Wood, a US Coast Guard and National Guard veteran, was selected from an outstanding pool of nominees for his unwavering dedication to combating food insecurity, isolation, and crisis among veterans in rural Montana. What began as a volunteer initiative has grown—under Jay’s tireless leadership—into a multi-county, four-state network serving hundreds of veterans with dignity and compassion.
Jay not only leads the Pantry’s daily operations but also delivers food directly to those who cannot travel, often using his own resources to ensure no veteran is left behind. His innovative “Safe Place Program,” which provides secure storage for veterans experiencing mental health crises, is a testament to his forward-thinking leadership and care for the whole veteran. Veterans consistently credit Jay for changing—and in many cases saving—their lives. From building trust with local businesses to mentoring fellow veterans and coordinating essential services,
Jay’s work is deeply rooted in respect, empowerment, and community building. In 2024 alone, the Pantry distributed over 41,000 pounds of food, thanks in no small part to Jay’s leadership. “Jay Wood is a living embodiment of selfless service,” said Blake Fuhriman, Executive Director of VNN. “His grit, compassion, and determination have created a legacy of hope and healing for veterans across Southwest Montana. We are honored to recognize Jay for his visionary leadership and profound impact.”
