It's pumpkin-carvin' time here in Butte and Southwest Montana.  Needless to say, it is also pumpkin spice season once again and time to relish in all of the fall-specific seasonal treats like pumpkin pie, pumpkin rolls, well, the list goes on and on.  With Halloween coming up on Thursday, this is also the specific time of year where the once bountiful supply of pumpkins that once could be found at our local Walmart and Safeway stores becomes bare and thin.  Simply put, if you're reading this right now, you could be running out of time.

This comes as a particular challenge to low-income parents who are barely scraping by as it is.  An extra five bucks or so for a pumpkin can come as a stretch with the holiday falling on the last day of the month and the budget already stretched thin after school clothes and now, costumes and candy.  This year, this challenge will be partially met by an anonymous donor who has apparently reinforced our community's cornucopia with a huge donation of pumpkins.

This particular unnamed donor has made it possible for Butte/Silver Bow to give away free pumpkins and they will be doing this tomorrow from noon until 5pm at Stodden Park.  If you are low-income and need a jack-o-lantern for your kids, get down there.  If you have a book full of fall recipes that require pumpkin, but you cannot find any, this is your chance.  Of course, a big thank-you goes out to the generous individual or group who made this possible.
