Protect Your Home: Essential Precautions For Cold Weather Survival
The first real cold snap of the Montana winter is here and hopefully it finds you warm and toasty. With extreme cold comes a greater likelihood of something going wrong in your home or with your vehicle. Although the weather is uncomfortable and sometimes downright miserable, there are a few things that you can do to make sure things stay running smoothly in your household.
KEEP A TRICKLE RUNNING
Especially during extreme cold it is a wise plan to keep at least a trickle of water running through your cold water line to prevent freezing. If you wake up to find the dreaded dry faucet, this means that your line has frozen and may require professional assistance. Heat tape around the frozen pipes can help tremendously as can increasing the flow of heat to the affected area.
SHUT OFF UNUSED AREAS
If you live in a large house keeping the whole thing heated during subzero weather can get very expensive very quickly. To save heat, many shut off rooms that are not regularly used and close the room's heat vents. This is also an excellent time to check for drafts around windows and ensure that they are contained.
USE SPACE HEATERS SPARINGLY
Electric space heaters can be a convenient and relatively quick way to warm up but left unchecked can easily become a fire hazard. Keep your space heater away from all drapes and combustible material to prevent fire and remember that space heaters draw a lot of electricity and can easily overload a power strip. Try to plug the heater directly into the wall and never, ever leave it unattended.
