This cool little ghost town just got a little bit cooler with the announcement of a new exhibit courtesy of Mary Ann Pearce and the folks at the Science Mine.
Over 2500 men died in the mines of Butte over the years, 43 at the Orphan Girl alone. It is the Orphan Girl site on which the World Museum of Mining now sits, just outside of "Hell Roarin' Gulch" which is said to be haunted itself. But we're not talking about ground-dwelling spirits. The World Museum of Mining is giving you the chance to go into the mine itself and see what lies beneath.
What better way to send off the summer than an afternoon in the shadows of the Big Butte enjoying not only our incredible World Museum of Mining but a rapidly growing brewfest featuring live music, great food and a fun afternoon of sampling the fares of some great local breweries, distilleries and food trucks. The 3rd Annual Big Butte Brewfest will take place this Saturday, August 24th from noon to 6pm. Let's take a look at who's participating and what we can expect.
Miners Union Day will be celebrated Saturday, June 15th at the World Museum of Mining which, in itself, is also a pretty big deal. Nowhere else will you find the history, relics and stories that is contained within her walls, but on the outside is the "Hell Roarin' Gulch" where you can walk the streets of a mining boomtown and see how life was. The museum also holds the actual Orphan Girl Mine which is the only mine in America where you can take an underground tour. These incredible exhibits will be on full display and a jubilant crowd is expected.
Let me be the first to say that I am not one to doubt the math that the people at Water and Environmental Technologies are showing. After all, they are some of the smartest people in town doing work that I can barely spell correctly, less understand. So, when they say that based on 2023 data, approximately 75% of the people who donate blood at this Friday's Blood and Food Drive will get a door prize, I am inclined to believe them. And these door prizes are pretty cool, too.
Exciting event alert! Montana Tech's Mining Team hosting the International Collegiate Mining Competition, with underground tours and mouthwatering food from local food trucks. Find out how to get your truck involved.
With Halloween coming up, we've been taking a look at some of Butte's most well-known haunted locations. One place, or rather, places, that bear serious consideration are Butte's mineyards which, for many, became graveyards. Historical markers around any mineyard in Butte give the mine's years of operation, it's depth and somewhat morbidly, the number of men who lost their lives there.
To help youth experience the eclipse safely, a free public viewing opportunity has been coordinated with Montana Technological University and MYAP. Kids of all ages are invited to come to the Intramural Field at Montana Tech, located south of the HPER Building on West Park Street and east of the World Museum of Mining in Butte. Attendees will be able to safely view the eclipse through Solar viewing glasses and telescopes, while learning about the Science behind the eclipse as it happens.
There will be dozens of breweries represented as well as cideries and distilleries at Saturday's Big Butte Brewfest. There will be food and craft vendors and some fantastic live music. In fact, performers for the event have been announced along with the addition of 5 distilleries.
