Yesterday we posed the question, how do you eat your pasty?

This will come as a real shock, but there are a lot of opinions on the correct way to eat a pasty. I had (wrongly) assumed most everyone fell into one of two camps, ketchup, or brown gravy. I personally use both, gravy first, then ketchup over the top. Perfection.

The other camp I knew we were going to hear from is the Chili and Cheese contingent. Between Joe’s and Gamers, there is a lot of Chili/Cheese love.

In all my years of eating pasties, I swear I had not heard of anyone putting butter on a pasty until yesterday, I was both amazed and disappointed in myself for never even thinking about it.

People were awesome about sharing their favorites. A lot of answers we were expecting, and several I just wasn't prepared for, things like sausage gravy, fried eggs, mayonnaise, mustard, ranch dressing, vinegar, and Worcestershire sauce.

There were several people who replace the gravy/ketchup mix, with mayonnaise in place of the ketchup, or swapped it for mustard. There was also a whole lot of love for Green Tabasco, like verging on stalking kind of ‘love’.

I am writing this with some 200+ responses as to how you eat your pasty. The percentages read like this:

28% of people are gravy and gravy only.

20% are brown gravy and ketchup.

10%+ are Ketchup only. (A note on ketchup, it was damn near unanimous, if the pasty is cold, it is ketchup) But I counted only those that didn’t denote cold.

9%- Chili and Cheese. I can’t believe I have never tried this. Some of my best friends would have picked Gamers chili-cheese pasty as their last meal, and I have never even tried it.

7% of people put butter on their pasty, some JUST butter, but most as the first layer. Again, ashamed I never have.

6% Plain. One comment from Maura Byrnes-Sweet grabbed me “if it’s made correctly, you shouldn’t need anything but salt and pepper” I think I need Maura to show me how to make pasties.

6% Gravy and GREEN Tabasco- This one feels dangerous, people are really adamant about ONLY GREEN tabasco. Not going to lie, I agree.

3% Gravy and Mayonnaise. I am trying to approach this with an open mind…. But Nope, nada, no way for me. I was surprised by the number of people who are into Mayo on their pasty.

11%- ‘Various’- This is where all the one-offs land. Salsa, Sausage gravy & cheese, mustard and brown gravy, mustard and mayo…., vinegar (I picture someone dipping forkloads of pasty in a cup of vinegar, like its lobster and butter), cottage cheese, sour cream, and of course the ever-present, ranch dressing…

Later we will get into who has/had the best pasties, whether carrots belong in pasties, and then we can discuss whether it’s ketchup or katsup.
