Indigenous Peoples Day Celebration set for Monday at BSB Courthouse
Celebrating Indigenous Peoples Day here in Butte is essential for acknowledging and honoring the rich histories, cultures, and contributions of Indigenous communities. This holiday serves as a counter-narrative to Columbus Day, which often overlooks or downplays the impact of colonization on Indigenous peoples, the effects of which are still felt today. By recognizing Indigenous Peoples Day, we highlight the resilience and strength of these communities, promoting awareness of their ongoing struggles and achievements.
Indigenous Peoples Day fosters a deeper understanding of injustices that historically were faced by Indigenous peoples, including land dispossession, cultural erasure, and systemic discrimination. It opens avenues for conversation about reconciliation and the importance of respecting Indigenous rights and sovereignty.
Moreover, Indigenous Peoples Day offers an opportunity to appreciate the diverse cultures and traditions that enrich our societies, encouraging the preservation of Indigenous languages, arts, and knowledge systems, which are vital for cultural heritage and biodiversity.
You are invited to a celebration if Indigenous Peoples Day this Monday, October 14th at the Butte-Silver Bow County Courthouse where a big event is planned by the Native Wellness Center, Western Native Voice and Butte-Silver Bow County. The celebration will get underway at 11am with a Native American Drumming demonstration as well as complimentary Indian Tacos from the Sweet Petites food truck for the first 100 attendees. The celebration will last until 1pm and is a family-friendly event that will help promote understanding and appreciation of Indigenous cultures here in the Mining City, particularly the traditions and culture of our Native American brothers and sisters.
