If anyone personifies persistence, patience and perseverance, it has to be Meg Murphy.  Most people in Butte know her as one of the standouts of Butte Central's first Girls Basketball championship teams who later earned her place in the Butte Sports Hall of Fame as a coach who turned an 0-for-her-first-two-seasons start into a legendary career.  A coaching tenure that would see her lead the Maroons to the State Championship Game four more times and winning two State Championships.  Her name is now regularly mentioned among Butte coaching legends, but it took a lot of work and a lot of time.

What many may not know is that Murphy's charitable work as the leader of the "Connecting for the Cancer Cure" golf tournament has lasted as long as her seat at the end of the Maroons bench.  While trophies are not won for fundraisers, Murphy's annual event would be nothing less than a dynasty and the good that has come out of the last 17 years may be even more important than her state championships.  Over those years, Connecting for the Cancer Cure has raised over $240,000 to help the St. James Cancer Center and their patients and more:

  • They have created the first ever Cancer Center Endowed Fund at St. James.
  • They have created a consultation room for patients' privacy
  • They have helped kickstart Southwest Montana's only lymphedra program, helping bring mobile mammography to our area.
  • They have helped countless cancer patients in their time of need.

Connecting for the Cancer Cure is happening this year on Saturday, September 13th at the Highland View Golf Course. The format is 2-man alternate shot, and the cost is $40 per golfer.  Tee time is 10am and events will last well into the late-night hours with the cornhole tournament at Uno's Lounge and a street party to follow with live music from High Ore Road.

You can get in on this event.  Register early or get further details by calling Meg Murphy at (406) 494-1165.

Guilty Pleasure Movies From the ’90s

These ’90s films do not have good reputations. Most are cheesy and a few are really dated. We love them anyway.
