We're all well aware that Butte is its own unique town in terms of history, demographics and attitude.  But Butte is also sometimes a bit behind the state when it comes to the arrival of Spring.  Here are a few signs that Spring, indeed, may have arrived for good.

POTHOLES

Potholes may be the single biggest complaint of Butte.  And Butte people love complaining about potholes.  But let's take it easy on our road crews.  Our town is in a climate where a lot of water freezes, melts and freezes again.  Water expands when it freezes and this makes every pothole get bigger and bigger.  And then it snows again.  Which brings us to...

ONE LAST BLIZZARD

It happens every year.  We get a few days of nice weather, put the snow shovel away and get out the grill.  And then it happens.  BOOM!  A spring storm comes rolling through putting 3 or 4 inches of fresh snow on the barbecue and absolutely destroying our sprouting tomato plants.  Was last week's snow our final storm or does Mother Nature have something more foreboding on our near horizon?  A few weeks will tell.

CHANGING OF THE UPTOWN DECORATIONS

One of the surest signs of the changing seasons are the changing of the decorations and welcome signs we'll be seeing on the streets of Uptown.  The shamrocks are down, but soon we'll see the welcome signs for the Montana Folk Festival, An Ri Ra, Uptown Hoops, Lunch in the Park, Music on Main and all of the other exciting events that are headed our way in just a few short weeks.  Not just Uptown, but all over.  Butte's Independence Day celebrations are legendary.  And we've got car shows.  Brewfests.  Rockin' the Rivers and Headwaters Country Jam are just a few miles away.  And of course, nothing competes with the outdoor opportunities Spring and Summer bring to Butte, America.

Possibly the biggest sign of Spring's arrival in Butte?  Like Carly Simon once sang, it's anticipation.  You can feel anticipation and excitement when you're on the streets.  We are the Festival City and we can't wait to get back into it again this Summer.
